The Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers Union will stage a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday to oppose the recent amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act.
A release by the union affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) said that the Act was anti-people.
The Act imposed heavy fine for violating traffic rules, steep hike in insurance premium, it said.
It demanded that autorickshaw drivers should get pension, loan facilities and other welfare schemes.
The union said that hike in prices of oil, automobile spares and also insurance premium have hit the drivers hard.
It said that autorickshaw drivers did not have social security benefits. They were in the grip of moneylenders. The government should implement a housing scheme for the drivers, it said.
