Academics concerned

October 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - MANGALURU:

Sripathi Kalluraya, Chairman, Department of Economics, Mangalore University, said it is a matter of concern that some elements were not tolerating free movement of students and were taking law into their own hands.

He said all the five students, who faced ‘moral policing’, were final-year students of Economics. They had left for Ullal after informing the class leader as they did not have classes in the forenoon since a teacher was on leave.

The students had told him that Tuesday’s incident was completely unwarranted. “All of them are bright students. They attended the classes on Wednesday,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa said the university can do little about it as the incident happened outside the campus.

He said the university was in the process of installing CCTVs at all strategic locations on its campus for enhancing security.
