Palemar makes many promises on Republic Day

The Government will set up a study chair in Mangalore University in memory of the late Benegal Narsing Rau, an eminent jurist and statesman from Mangalore who played a key role in drafting the Constitution.

J. Krishna Palemar, Minister for Ports and Fisheries and in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, said this in his Republic Day address at the Nehru Maidan here on Wednesday. The Minister said the study chair would be opened on February 26 to mark Rau's 125th birth anniversary. The Minister felicitated Praveena A. K. of Government Pre-university College, Sullia, who had won the State-level Hoysala award from the Government for his courage. Seetharama Shetty from Moodbidri; Jayananda Naik from Gurupura; and Ramesh Rao from Mulky who had won taluk level Krishi awards for 2009-10; were also felicitated.

Three students of two different government high schools who had scored highest marks in SSLC in 2009-10 were given away computers. They are Arpitha K. and Divya K. of Government Pre-University College, Punjalkatte; and Bindushree K. of the Government Pre-University College, Vamadapadavu. In addition, 29 persons who had excelled in sports, arts and cultural fields were honoured. Mr. Palemar said the late Rau had his early education in Canara High School in the city. He was adviser to the Government in formulating the Constitution.

The Minister said works on building a bus-stand near Pumpwell would start shortly. He said that land has been acquired for the purpose at an estimated cost of Rs. 8 crore.

Later, told presspersons that the Government would provide funds from the Rs. 100-crore second instalment special grant to the Mangalore City Corporation for acquiring 11 acres of land for the bus stand. Earlier, , the Minister said the Government was building a new vented dam at Thumbe for supplying drinking water to the city. Of Rs. 40.82 crore reserved for rural water supply in the district, the Government had spent Rs. 5.04 crore, he said.

He said the Cabinet had approved a Rs. 180-crore master plan for the integrated development of Kukke Subrahmanya temple and the temple town.

The Government was constructing nine buildings there for the stay of tourists. The Minister said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 7.58 lakh to the district under integrated rural energy scheme. It had been planned to install solar street lights and provide solar home lights under the scheme.
