The sports policy of Mangalore University released on Tuesday has proposed awarding grace marks to sports persons who are compelled to miss classes or do not have adequate time for studies due to sports training and participation.

It is for those who have brought laurels to the university in sports.

“Therefore, with the purpose of helping these students to get through examinations, grace marks are awarded,” the policy released by Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports, said.

According to Kishore Kumar C.K., Director of Physical Education of the university, the proposal will be implemented either from the on-going semester or from the next semester. The university has to take a decision on it.

According to the regulations governing the award of grace marks to both undergraduate and post-graduate students, it is mandatory for sportspersons to represent the country, university at the zonal/all-India inter-university competitions/tournaments to be eligible for securing grace marks.

“Additionally, the minimum criteria is securing any of the four places in the inter-university zonal/all-India tournaments or one of the first three places in national/international tournaments conducted and recognised by official sports federations,” the policy said.

It said that grace marks shall be awarded only to enable a sportsperson to pass papers of a course in which he has failed in a semester. “Grace marks shall be awarded in each failed paper up to a maximum extent of 15 marks per failed paper and only to the extent of passing that paper. For instance, if the pass marks are 40 and the sportsperson gets 35 marks, he shall be awarded five marks to make it 40,” it said.

“Grace marks shall be awarded after the regulatory university grace marks, if any, have been awarded, and only if sports grace marks are necessary to pass the paper even after awarding such university grace marks,” it said.

It said that such sportspersons would have to apply to the university within the stipulated period through the heads of the respective institutions to get grace marks.
