A landslip occurred on the railway tracks in the Valachil area near Faragipete, 20 km from here, early on Sunday and blocked the way for the Yeshwantpur Kannur Express (no. 6517) that was bound for the city. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the Farangipete railway station.
By the time the railways provided alternate transport, almost all the passengers had made their own arrangements. Senior Commercial Manager (Mysore Division) Alok Dayanand Sadhu told The Hindu that since the bus-stop was very close to the Farangipete railway station, most passengers made their own plans.
The tracks were finally cleared at around 2.30 p.m. and paved the way for the Sunday evening trip of the Yeshwantpur Express (no. 6518) bound for Bangalore. A release from the Palakkad headquarters of the Southern Railway said that owing to the delay, train no. 6518 began its journey from Mangalore Central instead of Kannur.
However, the passengers from Kannur were put on Mangala Express (no. 2617) and brought to Mangalore Central from where they were accommodated as per their bookings in the Bangalore-bound train.
A landslip at Eliyar in the Ambalamogaru gram panchayat resulted in partial damage to four houses on Sunday. Huge cracks have appeared on the ground in the settlement, which rests atop a steeply excavated hillock, causing fear among residents that another spell of heavy rain will cause greater damage. Meanwhile, there was a let up in the rain on Sunday. The rainfall during the last 24 hours till 8 a.m. on Sunday were: Bantwal 60 mm, Belthangady 54.6 mm, Puttur 34 mm, Sullia 22.2 mm, Uppinangady 66.2 mm, Bajpe 84.6 mm and Mangalore 89.6 mm.
Three houses damaged
Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:
Three houses were damaged in Udupi district due to rain on Sunday.
According to Udupi Taluk office, the loss due to the damage to these houses was around Rs. 3,500.
Udupi received a rainfall of 59.1 mm in the last 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday while Kundapur received 50.4 mm and Karkala 50.6 mm rainfall during the same period.
