Half-marathon in Udupi on March 5

The Udupi District Amateur Athletic Association will be organising a half- marathon titled “Manipal Marathon – 2017” here on March 5. The theme of this year’s marathon is “Run for stroke awareness.”

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, K. Raghupati Bhat, former MLA and president of the Marathon Organising Committee, said that the Manipal University, Syndicate Bank and Adani-UPCL, were sponsoring the marathon, which was being held for the 10th consecutive year. The marathon would be a 21.1-km run and would have separate men’s and women’s category.

The first prize in the men’s and women’s category is ₹70,000, the second prize is ₹ 35,000 while the third prize is ₹20,000. Those who secure fourth to tenth places in the half marathon will be given cash prizes of ₹5,000 and those completing the half marathon would get certificates. The marathon will begin at 6.30 p.m. at the KMC Greens and culminate at the same place.

A 10-km race would be organised in three categories — open, Udupi district school and college boys and girls, and senior citizens.

A 5-km race would be held for boys and girls of high schools (Udupi district only), while a 3-km race would be held for boys and girls of primary school students (Udupi district only). The top three winners in high school section would get cash prizes of ₹5,000, ₹ 3,000 and ₹2,000, while the top three winners of primary school section would cash prizes of ₹ 3,000, ₹ 2,000 and ₹ 1,000.

The marathon would be held as per international standards and chips will be installed on runners participating in the 21.1 km and 10-km events.
