About 297 school children and college students registered themselves at an event held in the city on Republic Day to paint the compound walls of the public library in Kadri-Mallikatta.

They were participating in “Change Mangalore” programme of Creating Resource to Empower Society Today (CREST), in association with Rotary Club of Mangalore Hillside.

The students included from St. Aloysius College, St. Aloysius School, St. Theresa School, Lourdes Central School, Chinmaya School, St.Agnes School, St.Sebastian School and Cascia High School. There were also chartered accountant and medical students besides advocates.

Republic Day

Sudhir Shetty, Chairman, Works Committee of Mangalore City Corporation, said that Republic Day holds no meaning unless people did something useful on the day. Corporator Gretta Rebello and MLA U.T. Khader participated.

First ones

Among the first ones to start painting the walls was Prarthana, a Class 1 student of Canara High School, Dongerkery, who painted the wall with yellow.

Greeshma from St. Aloysius College and her friends were waiting for their turn to paint and meanwhile were listening to the music of "Elysium" band, which was playing live at the venue.

K.V. Raghavendra, Deputy Director, Public Libraries, said he had been approached one month ago if the young people could paint the walls and that he had responded positively to the suggestion. He said that the library would be getting a new reference section in 15 days.
