Youth held for girlfriend’s murder

Girl avoiding him on parents’ advice suspected to be the cause

Nanguneri police have arrested a youth for allegedly murdering his girlfriend after she refused to marry him.

The police said people alerted them around 6.30 p.m. on Thursday about a girl found dead inside a defunct factory on Perumal Nagar–Serakulam Road near Moolaikkaraipatti. The police found that the throat of the girl had been slit and her hands and legs tied.

During investigation, the police found that the deceased was M. Ashiha Parveen, 17, of Rahmath Nagar under Pettai police station limits.

Parveen, who went to attend a computer training class on Thursday morning, did not return home in the afternoon. When her mother contacted her over mobile phone, Parveen reportedly told her that she would return home shortly. As she failed to return home even after 3 p.m., her mother tried to contact Parveen repeatedly, but she did not attend the calls.

The police found that Parveen was in love with one M. Sundararaj, 20, of Mela Seval. When her parents opposed the affair, she started avoiding him. As Sundararaj started blackmailing her with the photos she had taken with him and compelling her to marry him, she agreed to meet him.

After taking Parveen to the defunct factory on his bike on the pretext of returning the photos, he allegedly murdered her by slitting her throat with a knife.

“Since her hands and legs had been tied, Sundararaj must have orchestrated the crime with the help of a few others. We’ve detained Sundararaj and are questioning him to identify those who helped him in the crime,” said a police officer.
