Police said a youth hanged himself to death from a tree in front of Vaeinthaankulam new bus-stand on Monday evening. When the police checked his shirt, they recovered an ATM card and later found that the victim was D. Ramesh, 34, of Singikulam near Kalakkad, now living at Medavaakkam in Chennai.

Ramesh, who had come to his native place, hanged himself from the tree in front of the new bus-stand. On seeing this, a drunkard, who came out of the bar opposite the new bus-stand, allegedly told autorickshaw drivers and the passers-by that the youth had committed suicide after being slapped a fine of ₹ 10,000 by the police for riding the bike under the influence of alcohol.

As this information spread like wild fire on social media, the police, who were probing the suicide, picked up the drunkard, who was identified as Thangadurai, a Puthiya Thamizhagam cadre from Nazareth in Thoothukudi district, and took him to Melapalayam police station for interrogation.

The police alerted the victim’s family in Chennai and also his relatives in Kalakkad about the suicide.

Those in distress or having suicidal tendencies could seek help and counselling by calling State’s health helpline 104 or Chennai-based Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
