Youth commits suicide leaving note of police harassment

A youth, M. Periyasamy (23) committed suicide on Monday night by consuming pesticide at his house at S. Pudupatti near here leaving a note accusing a Traffic Sub-Inspector of Police “Mahendran” of having abused him during a vehicle check on Sunday.

However, police said that the deceased a casual labourer was detained in Sivakasi Town on Sunday for drunken riding and for not having driving license. The police had let him off after detaining his motorbike.

On Monday night, he was found lying dead in the house with blood oozing out from eyes and nose. The family members sought action against the “SI Mahendran” mentioned in the note.

However, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sivakasi), T. Prabhakaran, said that Periyasamy was charged for drunken riding by a SI named G. Ramanathan. There was no SI named Mahendran. Besides, there was no incident of Periyasamy having been abused by the police.

The police promised to take appropriate action based on the post-mortem report. However, after the police told the family members that the post-mortem report revealed that the death was only by the poison and the body bore no visible injuries, they took the body home.

A case of suspicious death has been registered by the Malli police station.
