Over 100 women from Kathirnayakkanpatti staged a protest at the Collectorate here on Monday and submitted a petition to the Collector, demanding relocation of a TASMAC outlet in their village.
“There are 3500 families living in our village and the TASMAC outlet is proving a nuisance and menace to women and children. Schoolchildren find it difficult to return home during evenings as they pass by the outlet and often men in inebriated state pass lewd comments and use an abusive language on them. There have been death of men in our village due to excessive alcohol abuse and as a result young widows are left to fend for themselves,” said Nalini Devi, a villager.
“We have been giving petitions since many months and we have received no response. The district administration should take steps to relocate the outlet within a week,” she said.
Facilities sought
People from the Scheduled Caste hamlet of Vellabommanpatti in Vedasandur taluk submitted a petition to the Collector, seeking basic facilities for their village, including library and community hall.
“There are hundreds of SC families living in the village, but we lack a community hall, because of which we are forced to go to Vadamadurai and hire halls for holding any kind of family or village functions. As most of us are daily wagers, we can’t afford the halls in Vadamadurai that charge a minimum of ₹ 25,000. It will be helpful if the government builds a community hall in the village. There’s also no library for school students,” said M. Sivakumar, a villager.
“We have also requested the Collector to build a stage to hold events or plays during local temple festivals. An old school building in the village has been razed down recently and that land is available for building these facilities,” he added.
