After a lull, robbers have struck again in Alagarkoil, targeting women devotees. About 30 sovereigns from three women had been robbed on a single day on Monday.
Madurai Rural Police said that in the first case, a woman who was returning down the hill in the temple-operated bus lost her jewel when a youth pulled her gold chain and vanished. In the second incident, a motorcycle-borne robber wearing full-mask helmet snatched a gold chain from a 60-year-old woman and sped away. Another woman was also relieved of her gold chain in a similar fashion.
As all the three incidents were reported within the temple area on a single day, police suspect that the same gang might have committed the crime utilising the huge crowd at the hill temple. Further investigation is on.
At Alanganallur
A woman, Ramya Devi (58), residing in an apartment opposite Fatima College used to go to her school by bus. After alighting at Chinna Palamedu, when the woman was walking along the road, a youth in a two-wheeler came near Ramya Devi and under the pretext of enquiring an address, snatched her gold chain and escaped from the scene. Alanganallur police are investigating.
