They say they are predominantly conservancy workers

A group of Scheduled Caste women, who have been living in Dalit Colony in Nilaiyur for over 30 years, petitioned the district administration here on Monday, seeking patta for land sites and additional housing units.

Representing the residents of the colony, the women said they were predominantly conservancy workers engaged on daily wages and they could not afford the rent for the housing units they had been living in.

One of the petitioners, A. Alagumari, said the 50 housing units which were built by the State government several years ago were now cramped. “Our families have expanded and at least six persons live in each house. Many original residents have moved out after renting out their houses for high amounts,” she said.

Another resident, C. Indira, who works as a conservancy worker, said they paid a minimum of ₹2,000 as monthly house rent. “We receive our salaries once in every three months and also we cannot predict the amount we get. Hence, we cannot regularly pay the rent,” she added.
