Women empowerment could be achieved only if the society and homes support them, said R. Vimala, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Mission, here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the ninth edition of Madurai Symposium, a four-day event, Ms. Vimala spoke about her State’s development model which focussed on women’s health, nutrition, sanitation and economic empowerment.
Explaining the objective of the event, Executive Director of DHAN Foundation M. P. Vasimalai said the Madurai Symposium served as a bridge between tradition and future through a process of searching for new knowledge. DHAN Foundation Chairman B.T.Bangera hoped the symposium would pave the way in ensuring participation of women in all spheres of developmental works in the coming days.
Speaking of new financial instruments introduced by the government, Chief General Manager of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Padma Raghunathan said that in most districts, self-help group movement was now assisted by e-Sakthi, a project to ensure transparency and proper maintenance of records. “Women in remote areas are able to avail financial assistance without delay,” she said.
Additional Collector S. P. Amrith launched Vishesh Microfinance Yojana, a scheme of Central government for the differently abled. Corporation Commissioner S. Visakan signed a memorandum of understanding with Hitech Arai and DHAN Foundation for the maintenance of 10 tanks at a cost of ₹1.04 crore.
