MADURAI
The wife of a life convict has approached the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to set him at liberty after it has emerged that he is suffering from nephritic syndrome (inflammation of kidney).
The petitioner, Anjara Begum, wife of Meeran Mideen of Dindigul, who is a life convict currently lodged at Madurai Central Prison, claimed that the health condition of her husband had worsened over the years. She said he was ailing from the kidney-related problem and needed dialysis.
Due to the lack of adequate medical facilities at Madurai Central Prison, he was transferred to Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai, and subsequently brought back to the Madurai prison.
The High Court Bench, while hearing a similar petition earlier, had directed the authorities concerned to provide him appropriate medical care. However, with his health deteriorating fast, his wife said, he had to immediately undergo kidney transplantation.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar directed the Home department to consider the recommendation of the family and forward it to the Governor within six weeks.
