A woman police constable committed suicide by shooting herself with a service pistol at the Nagaiyapuram police station under Peraiyur sub-division in the small hours of Wednesday.

The police said the woman, T. Karupayee (30), took the extreme step following frequent quarrel with her husband.

The victim rang up one of her colleagues before committing suicide, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Peraiyur, M. Balasubramanian, said.

She locked herself up inside the station and pulled the trigger around 1.30 a.m.

The police personnel who were on night patrol found her lying lying in a pool of blood.

A 2005-batch constable, Karupayee was depressed over frequent quarrel with her husband, Thethanasamy, an alcoholic.

"Even on Tuesday night, he had fought with the constable before she came for the night duty," the DSP said.

The couple, who got married seven years ago, were childless.  Thethanasamy, an Army employee had not turned up for duty for some time now.  He used to fleece money from Karupayee on the pretext of going back to duty, but will return after spending the money, the police said.

The body has been taken to Government Hospital in Tirumangalam.
