In a tragic incident, a young woman, Durga devi (33), and her son, Sriram (6), were found dead under mysterious circumstances in the thickly- populated area of Navarathinapuram off Kamarajar Salai in the city on the night of Monday.

Initial investigations suggested that the gold chain, four bangles and earrings that Durga Devi was wearing were missing. A sum of Rs. 86,000 in cash kept in the almirah in the house was also missing.

The victim's husband Vijayakumar (39) is a tailor and has a shop on Kamarajar Salai. Apart from employing some tailors in his shop, he engaged some others, including a few women tailors, to work at his house. At around 7.30 p.m., Vijayakumar had come to his house and went back to the shop. The tailors at home also had left for their houses after work at around 9 p.m. When Vijayakumar returned from his shop at around 10.30 p.m., he saw his wife and son lying in a pool of blood.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent the two bodies for post-mortem. A senior police officer said that several teams had been formed.

It is suspected that the unidentified miscreants might have planned to rob the cash and in the process of committing the crime, the victims (Durga Devi and her son) might have raised an alarm. To ensure that the identity of the robbers was not known, they might have taken the extreme step of murdering the woman and her son and escaped with the valuables, the official said.

Teppakulam police have registered a case of murder-for-gain. The value of the missing properties was estimated to be Rs 1.91 lakh.

Further investigation is on.
