The Public Works Department on Friday released 760 cusecs of water from Vaigai dam here for the samba cultivation in the double-crop region of Madurai district.

Following a significant inflow from Mullaperiyar dam and fairly good rainfall in its own catchment areas, Vaigai dam reached the full level twice last year. PWD officials said that for the past four months, water was being released in turns for agriculture in Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.

As on Friday, the water level stood at 49.98 feet in Vaigai dam. T. Subramanian, Executive Engineer, Periyar Vaigai Basin Circle, PWD, said that this would be the last turn of water for the double-crop region.

“The water will be released for four days. By February 22, 2019, we would have provided water for 240 days for both kuruvai and samba crops. With the available water, we are happy that we were able to provide water for these many days,” he said.
