Water released from Sothuparai dam


Water was released from the Sothuparai dam to irrigate lands and provide drinking water to thousands of acres here on Tuesday.

A total of 2,865 acres – 1,825 acres under old ayacut and 1,040 acres under new ayacut areas would benefit, said Collector M. Pallavi Baldev.

The water level in Sothuparai dam has reached 100.44 mcft (its capacity is 126.28 feet) with good inflow and outflow of 100 cusecs due to good rain in the catchment areas as on Tuesday.

According to a schedule released by the district administration, water will be released for a total of 152 days from October 15, 2019 till March 15, 2020 based on inflow and outflow for the irrigation purpose.

For the first crop, 30 cusecs will be released for 62 days until December 15, 27 cusecs will be released for 31 days till January 15 and 29 cusecs for 59 days until March 15 next year.

Water will also be released for drinking water purpose to villages like Thenkarai, Lakshmipuram and Thamaraikulam in Periyakulam taluk.

The Collector requested farmers to use water judiciously and raise short-term crops for better yield.

Project Director, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj P. Thilagavathy and Executive Engineer, Public Works Department for Theni S. Kavitha took part in the function.
