Children of the washermen should be given 3% reservation within the quota being extended to the Most Backward Community in education and employment as the children cannot compete with the children of other socially and economically powerful Most Backward Communities, the washermen have appealed.

The protesting washermen said the rain and consequent flood caused extensive damage to the infrastructure created by washermen along the rivers and other places during the last northeast monsoon in almost all the districts.

Though several representations had been submitted to the State government on various occasions demanding compensation for the affected washermen, they were yet to receive the assistance. Hence, the State government should announce due compensation to the affected washermen, they said.

Washermen from all sub-sects should be given community certificate as ‘Suryakulam’, they said.

President of Tirunelveli District Washermen Welfare Association S. Mariappan, office-bearers U. Mariappan, E. Piramanayagam and others participated in the demonstration.
