Volunteers conduct candlelight vigil against death penalty

Members of voluntary organisations and human rights activists conducted a candle light vigil in front of a bust of former Chief Justice of India, P. N. Bhagwati, at the Society for Community Organisation (SOCO) Trust here on Monday, demanding the abolition of death penalty.

State-wide campaign

The vigil was organised to mark the United Nations Day Against Capital Punishment, which falls on October 10, as part of a State-wide campaign against capital punishment.

Those who addressed the gathering included Bhagat Singh, advocate; Paul Baskar of Peace Trust and Selvagomathi of Justice Shivarj V. Patil Foundation.

The candle light vigil was led by A. Mahaboob Batcha, managing trustee, SOCO Trust.

The campaign, jointly organised by Society for Community Organisation Trust, Justice Bhagwati Foundation, Justice Shivraj V. Patil Foundation and Peace Trust, will conclude on October 16.
