MADURAI

A section of residents of Periya Pulankulam near Andarkottaram attempted to take out a mock funeral procession at the Collectorate here on Monday to highlight the absence of an approach road to the cremation ground in the village.

S. Malaichamy, a resident, said funeral processions had to cross Vaigai riverbed. “This becomes difficult during rainy season or whenever there is water in the river,” he said.

Complaining that the district administration was apathetic to their long-pending demand for construction of a pucca road to reach the cremation ground, the protesters said they had now laid a mud road on their own after a family came forward to donate land.

Pointing out that the land adjacent to the donated land belonged to an individual, Mr. Malaichamy said the government must take efforts to acquire the land and construct a proper road.

The villagers later met Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and submitted a petition. Stating that a petition was submitted last year as well, the villagers said they were hopeful that the district administration would take action this time.
