Residents of Kodikulam village under Nainarkoil police station limits caught hold of three chain snatchers after intercepting the car in which they were trying to escape after snatching a nine-sovereign gold chain of an aged woman.

Police said the trio – a local person and two others from Ennore and Besant Nagar in Chennai – were trying to escape in the car after snatching the gold chain of a woman at Kazhanikudi near Devipattinam on Thursday evening when the villagers chased and caught them.

The police said while one of the three accused, who was driving the car, remained in the car, the two others went closer to the woman on the pretext of making some enquiry and snatched her gold chain. As she screamed for help, local people chased them on two-wheelers but the car sped fast.

Based on the information provided by them, the residents of Kodikulam intercepted the car and caught the three accused. They handed them over to Nainarkoil police after giving them a thrash. The police seized the car and recovered the gold chain from them.

As they were found to be involved in other such crimes, Crime Branch police from Ramanathpuram and Paramakudi sub-divisions interrogated the trio, who were found drunk. Before snatching the chain of the woman, they had made a chin snatching attempt in Devipattinam, the police said.
