October 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - MADURAI:

Residents of Siruvalai village from Madurai North Taluk submitted a petition at the Collectorate demanding renovation of a ration shop in their village.

Stating that the building was kept locked at present for want of renovation works, the villagers said that ration goods were being distributed out of a small rented premises for the last four years which was not accessible to many.

“There are more than 1,500 persons living here and we need a proper ration shop where there is regular supply of goods and proper storage space,” said A. Palpandian, a resident of the village.

The residents further alleged that there were no basic facilities such as street lights and underground drainage in the area.

Lack of drainage

“Since there is no proper drainage system, the sewage is let into the open drains which overflows all over the roads. No provision is made for clearing garbage and the area is full of plastic waste which lies dumped for days together. It causes serious health hazards,” Mr. Palpandian added.
