The ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away in Delhi on August 16, 2018, were immersed in the Vaigai near Simmakkal here on Sunday by members of Bharatiya Janata Party and its fraternal organisations.

The immersion was done as per BJP’s plan to immerse the ashes of the leader in different regions of the country after allowing the public to pay homage.

Party sources said that the ashes were brought to Madurai by party State vice-president M.R. Gandhi via Dindigul and Theni districts on Saturday night, following which the urn was kept at the party’s office in Bibikulam.

On Sunday, Sasiraman, party district president, said that the ashes were taken to Ayyanar temple grounds in Sellur, Munichalai junction, Jeeva Nagar junction in Jaihindpuram, and West Masi Street and North Masi Street junctions for the public and leaders from different political parties to pay homage.

“Apart from a large number of public, district-level functionaries and representatives from various political parties, including DMK, AIADMK, DMDK and CPI, paid their respects,” he said.
