Power supply to Pamban suspended for three hours

RAMANATHAPURAM

Power supply to Pamban was disrupted for about three hours on Tuesday night, after portions of power cables laid under the footpath of Pamban road bridge caught fire.

The fire broke out at two places on the bridge - one near the Mandapam side and the other near the Pamban side. On being alerted, Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed there and put out the fire, police said.

As the cables supplying power to Rameswaram remained unaffected, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation employee restored power supply to Pamban, using them, officials said.

Some BSNL lines were also damaged in the fire and all the burnt power cables were replaced on Wednesday, the officials said.

The police said concrete slabs, covering the cables, were found open and filled with garbage. Some cigarette butts tossed carelessly could have caused the fire, they said.

Fire service personnel said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
