Gusty wind disrupts train services

Train services from Rameswaram island were disrupted on Saturday evening as at lest three trains could not pass through the Pamban rail bridge following gusty and high velocity wind, which swept the Pamban and Mandapam areas since afternoon.

As the anemometer installed at both ends of the Pamban rail bridge, connecting the island with mainland by rail, automatically turned the signal red, the Chennai-bound Rameswaram-Chennai express and two other trains remained in the station.

While the Rameswaram-Chennai express, which was to leave Rameswaram at 5 p.m. suffered a delay of more than three hours, the Rameswaram-Madurai passenger, which was scheduled to leave at 5.45 p.m. suffered delay of about two hours, railway source said.

The Rameswaram-Kanniyakumari express scheduled to leave at 8.45 p.m. also stranded at the Rameswaram railway station, the sources said. As the wind blew at the speed of more than 60 km per hour, the signal at Pamban bridge remained red till late in the evening, they said.
