In a bid to promote and preserve traditional art, artisans from across India were invited to exhibit their craft at the inaugural arts and craft exhibition initiated by Pandyan Arts Community and Environment (PACE) Foundation of the Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, here on Thursday. The three-day event is being held at the hotel.

Exhibits from different States ranging from miniature to gold plated paintings, tribal handicraft to woven fabric, gift articles made from dry leaves to intricate glass works are on display. A total of 35 artisans, including those from Madurai, are showcasing their craft to the public.

Speaking to The Hindu, co-ordinator of the event Ramesh Babu, who is also the Director of Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, said that the plan to provide a platform to traditional art was first mooted in 2017.

“The art and craft exhibition has taken shape this year coinciding with our 50th year in operation”, he said.

He said that PACE will now hold the exhibition as an annual event during the December vacation.

“ It is a community partnership initiative. We don’t want to call it corporate social responsibility (CSR) which sounds mandatory. This initiative is out of our interest in arts and craft”, he added. The event which began on December 27 will conclude on December 29. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the admission is free.
