Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has said the ongoing 160-km-long rail track doubling work in Madurai– Vanchi Manyiachi– Thoothukudi section is progressing as per schedule and ₹170 crore has been allocated for the project for the current fiscal, according to a release issued by the office of Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi.

In a written reply to the questions raised by Ms. Kanimozhi in Parliament on the progress of the much-awaited ₹1,182.31-crore project, Mr. Goyal said track doubling with electrification of this section was included in Budget 2015–2016 and sanctioned in August 2017. A sum of ₹341.83 crore had been spent up to March 2019 and ₹170 crore allocated for the current fiscal.

Construction works had been taken up wherever land was available. To ensure timely completion of the project, funds had been arranged through Extra Budgetary Resources. Regular meetings were being held with the officials of the State government and the authorities concerned to resolve issues obstructing the progress of the project, seek their assistance for smooth execution of works, shift utility services, requisite permissions, etc., Mr. Goyal said.
