Three students studying in three different private engineering colleges in the city were arrested on charges of damaging public property – a bus and two cars.

Police said on Monday that the students, whose names were given as - Arunraj, Vignesh and Ranjit Kumar studying second year engineering courses in the colleges had visited a liquor bar in K. Pudur on Sunday.

After consuming liquor, the boys, in an inebriated mood, had allegedly stoned a bus and two cars in DRO Colony, near Income Tax office Road and near B.B. Kulam while they were riding their vehicle.

Shocked over the act, the drivers had immediately informed the Tallakulam police about it by furnishing the two-wheeler registration number details, following which a team traced the students and seized their vehicle. Investigations suggested that they were drunk, an investigation officer said.

The Tallakulam police booked a case under TN Public Property Damages Act and produced the trio before a Judicial Magistrate court, which remanded them to judicial custody, police added.

Meanwhile, senior police officers warned of severe action against those who violated Motor Vehicl Act rules. Riding more than two persons on a two-wheeler is an offence.

Similarly, driving vehicles after consuming liquor is also highly risky .

An intensified drive would be organised to check vehicles at different locations in the city for such offences, they asserted.
