Teacher arrested for harassing girl student

A 50-year-old Physical Education Teacher (PET) of a high school in Vilangudi was arrested on charges of harassing a student.

The All Woman Police Station, Samayanallur, has booked him under the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and for criminal intimidation. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody following a complaint lodged by the mother of one of the girl students of Class X.

The teacher was accused of using abusive language and having hurled a stone at the girl while she was going to the toilet in the school recently.

The man had also threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to other teachers, the police said.

Earlier in the day, a section of students gathered outside the school in protest against the teacher’s behaviour.

They demanded action against him for harassing students and also teasing teachers with nicknames.

He was the only male teacher in the school where six women teachers, including the Headmistress, are working.

The Headmistress pacified the students and brought them back to school.

Later, when the police started an enquiry, many students and teachers complained against the PET, the Superintendent of Police, Vijayendra Bidari, said.

The police had asked them to give complaints in writing for further action, he also said.
