A large number of people give petitions seeking allotment of houses there

A large number of people gave petitions to Collector T. S. Rajasekar here on Monday seeking allotment of houses in Rajakkur, built by Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, under Prime Minister’s Housing for all Scheme - Urban.

The heavy inflow of petitions which arrived in bulk from various groups led to the grievance day meeting extending till 2 p.m.

A set of 1,088 housing units have been constructed as part of the second phase of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board’s schemes for ₹ 8.25 lakh each. The houses built under Affordable Housing Partnership wing of the project, receive State government contribution of ₹ 5 lakh and Central government contribution of ₹ 1.5 lakh for each house. Beneficiaries should contribute ₹1.75 lakh.

The houses, measuring 400 square feet, has a kitchen, a hall, a bedroom, a separate bathroom and a toilet. Ever since the Rajakkur flats made headlines following an inspection by the Collector, there has been a huge demand for them

A. Dhanalakshmi, a daily wage worker from Avaniapuram, said she had been living in a rented house for many years and was a daily wage worke. “We are in need of a house. Who else will accommodate us but the government?” she asked.

R. Sakuntala, a visually impaired woman residing in Sammattipuram, who came with eight others, said that all of them were in requirement of functional households with basic amenities. “We have heard that the new houses are well-equipped. It is only right that we get preference and for no cost,” she said.

A source that that they were yet to decide on allotment of houses and exercise will begin soon.
