Hundreds of students from various schools took part in a rally carrying 670-foot-long national flag on arterial roads of Aruppukottai as part of 73rd Independence Day celebrations on Thursday.

The programme was organised by Iqra Matriculation School in which students from Green Wisdom Matriculation School, Mecca Primary School and Al-Ameen Muslam Higher Secondary school took part.

“Our students showcased national integration and patriotic feeling. We wanted to create awareness about the significance of the national flag not only among the students but also the members of the public and hence got into this idea of huge tricolour,” said S. M. Sheik Mahaboob, principal of the school.

The rally was flagged off by former Aruppukottai municipal chairman, Sivaprakasam.

Meanwhile, students of a private college offered their services at the Kamaraj memorial as per the direction of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday. The court had ordered this to reform the students who had attended classes under the influence of alcohol.

Besides cleaning the memorial, they also held placards to create awareness on evils of liquor.

At V.V. Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar, Principal Meena Rani presented the inaugural address and president O. M. S. R. J. Mahesh Babu, hoisted the flag.

At Kalasalingam Arts and Science College Principal Chandra hoisted the national flag in the presence of vice-president (Academic), Kalasalingam University, Dr. S. Shasi Anand. Vice- Chancellor of the University R. Nagaraj, distributed prizes and certificates.

Dean V. Vasudevan was present.
