A total of 204 students showcased their scientific acumen at the 27th edition of the National Children’s Science Congress held at Madurai Kamaraj University here on Tuesday.

The contest, which took place at district level saw a variety of projects on making the country clean, green and healthy.

There were models of biogas plants, waste water treatment units, waste segregation, biodegradable plastic and even edible plastic. Students focussed on improving health by creating chemical-free fertilizers and pesticides as well as analysing various components going into the making of chocolates.

M. Rajesh, representative of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum in Madurai, said five projects from two Tamil medium and three English medium schools were selected to represent the district at State level.

“There was a phenomenal competition among students who enthusiastically brought out their ideas forward. We evaluated their oral presentation, report, approach towards scientific solution and societal implication,” he said.

MKU Registrar (in-charge) R. Sudha, who inaugurated the event, said that she was enamoured by the wisdom that the students brought to the table and wished that they would continue this journey. Syndicate members of the university M. Ramakrishnan and H. Shakila participated.

Students between classes 6 and 10 from Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Thumbaipatti; Panchayat Union Middle School, Periyar Nagar, Akshara Matriculation Higher Secondary school, Sivakasi Nadars Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School were the final five.

National Children’s Science Congress coordinators from Madurai K. Mutharasan and K. Malaiselvi organised the event.
