It was a novel attempt by the students of The American College, who performed a flash mob to spread awareness about suicide prevention, at the Vishaal De Mal here on Friday.

The performance turned out to be a crowd-puller as enthralled passers-by also joined the dancing youngsters.

“Life is full of challenges and people must enjoy and boldly face these challenges. Through this performance, we want to convey that there is medical help available for those who are struggling with anxiety and depression,” said College Principal M. Davamani Christober. The students also carried placards and banners to create awareness of suicide prevention.

The youngsters of the current generation have a low level of emotional intelligence, said R. Kayalvizhi, assistant professor of psychology. “They are not emotionally strong enough to face failures or rejections. Hence, many of them resort to physically harm themselves,” she noted.

At the end of the performance, R. Shahid Afridi, a second-year student, read out a poem to highlight the reasons that people opt for committing suicide. “Friends and family must support people who have suicidal tendencies and help them in seeking medical help. If you see someone who is depressed, speak to them and listen to their problems,” he said.

The students also launched a signature campaign and asked everyone to take a pledge against attempting suicide and spread awareness of suicide prevention.
