Strike by mechanised boats

Demanding permission for ‘stay fishing’, the mechanised boat workers struck work on Saturday.

Since the country boat fishermen are against practising ‘stay fishing’ by mechanised boats as it was causing frequent high-seas mishaps that even led to the loss of life of country boat fishermen in the past, the mechanised boat fishermen of Thoothukudi fishing harbour are allowed to do fishing between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Complaining that the ‘short duration’ was not sufficient for doing their fishing operations as it was causing “huge loss” to them every day, the mechanised boat fishermen struck work on Saturday. They said the government should allow them to do ‘stay fishing’ in which the mechanised boats would stay in the high-seas for a few days and return to shore only after getting huge catches.
