A bankers’ orientation programme organised by the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission (TNSRLM) and District Mission Management Unit was inaugurated by Collector L. Subramanian here on Friday.

Speaking about the programme, A. Pandian, Joint Director and Project Officer, TNSRLM, said it would focus on credit eligibility of self-help groups (SHG).

“Since the SHGs need support through economic empowerment, we are creating awareness of it among the banks,” he said. “We will conduct more programmes to encourage banks to give credit to the SHGs and intensify cooperation between banks and the TNSRLM,” Mr. Pandian said. The Collector said the TNSRLM had implemented many schemes in villages in the district to ensure that the beneficiaries contributed to development.

“The mission has been helping women form the SHGs. Among the 288 SHGs formed so far, 168 were given loans and other economic support. Rural poverty eradication associations have been formed and skill-based training imparted to unemployed youths,” he said.

The TNSRLM was first implemented in Madurai East, Tirupparankundram, Kottampatti and Melur panchayat unions in 2013-2014 and it is currently in operation in Madurai West, Alanganallur, Usilampatti, Chellampatti and Tirumangalam panchayat unions also.
