‘State can utilise SDRF funds for relief’

The Centre told the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday that the State could utilise the funds under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in order to support Cyclone Gaja-affected areas.

The Centre had already released ₹353.70 crore from the SDRF in order to meet immediate relief measures. The State could now utilise ₹1,277 crore available under the SDRF for relief activities. The inspection team had submitted its report to the Centre which would be assessed by it for further fund allocation, Assistant Solicitor General V. Kathirvelu told the court.

Earlier, Additional Advocate General K. Chellapandian told the court that the Centre was yet to allocate adequate funds to carry out relief measures.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu took cognisance of the submissions and adjourned the hearing till January 7, 2019. The court was hearing six public interest litigation petitions seeking directions to expedite relief measures at the cyclone-affected regions.
