SSI assaulted

A series of violent incidents leading to stabbing of a bus conductor and a youth, and thrashing of a Special Sub-Inspector of Police were reported since Sunday evening during the procession of Lord Kallazhagar in the city.

The police said that the SSI, Jayasankar (51), attached to Anna Nagar police station had gone to offer prayers to Lord Kallazhagar, along with his family members. When he saw a group of youths causing nuisance to fellow devotees, he questioned them.

The youths beat him up. They also assaulted his son, who tried to intervene, and snatched his gold chain. Anna Nagar police have registered a case for rioting, using abusive language, hurting, extortion and criminal intimidation.

In another case, the conductor of a mini-bus, T. Vinod Kumar (27) of Chellampatti, was stabbed by a person at Goripalayam in the early hours of Monday.

The police said that more than 15 persons were sleeping inside the bus parked at Goripalayam. The conductor had woken them up around 3 p.m. and asked them to leave the bus.

A few of them picked a quarrel with him and one of them stabbed him. The victim has been admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital.

In another fracas reported at Bibikulam, A. Mayakannan (21) sustained multiple stab injuries. The incident was reported at PTR Main Road junction on 10.30 p.m. on Sunday. Mayakannan underwent two operations at Government Rajaji Hospital where he was admitted to.
