A total of 150 special children with various mental disabilities performed Shashangasana for five minutes at the Armed Reserve Police Ground here on Friday, making a world record attempt.

Jointly organised by Sparks Vidyalaya, special school for autism and intellectual disabilities, and Saksham-Madurai, an NGO for the differently-abled, the attempt was monitored by a representative from Noble World Record Book.

“Yoga is beneficial for special children both mentally and physically. Especially, shashangasana helps them get good sleep. We have been teaching the asana for the children and training them,” said Andavar P. Jaidev, yoga instructor.

Inspector General of Police, South Zone, K.P. Shanmuga Rajeswaran, was the chief guest and K.B. Piramanayagam, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, Madurai, was the guest of honour.
