There has been a spate of theft cases in the rural district police limits over the past two days. A total of 33 sovereigns of gold, around Rs. 30,000 in cash, a two-wheeler and some electronic goods have been reported missing from four houses.

The police said that Anbazhagan, the manager of an insurance company, who, along with his family, had left for Tiruchi on Saturday, returned on Tuesday to find his house, located at Malligai Nagar near Iyer Bungalow, burgled and 12 sovereigns of gold, 200 gm of silver ornaments and Rs. 15,000 in cash missing.

In the same Oomachikulam police station limits, nine sovereigns of gold, a two-wheeler, a mobile phone, a DVD player, and a few silk saris were looted from a house in NMS Nagar in Tirumalpuram.

The police said that 34-year-old Muthulakshmi lived alone in the isolated house. Her husband, Prabhakaran, was working in Dubai. The woman had left with her children to visit her parents in Vilangudi on Tuesday evening, leaving the house key with Natarajan, a watchman.

According to police, Natarajan was out when the robbers struck, leaving the front door ajar which caught the attention of neighbours. The intruders entered the house by breaking open a window.

In the same police station limits, S. Ponnusamy of Viswasanthi Nagar complained of losing a bag containing two sovereigns of gold left near an open window.
