As part of the security arrangements, the Madurai District Court will have strengthened police force, closed circuit television cameras, metal detector gates and separate parking spaces for advocates and public.
Following a PIL petition filed by advocate S. Muthukumar stating that there were no proper security arrangements on the district court campus, the Madras High Court Bench directed to conduct a joint meeting of the bar members and police officers to draw a security plan for safeguarding the district court campus from terror attacks.
A meeting was held in this regard by R. Rajasekaran, Principal District Judge (in-charge), on September 8 with the Bar Association and on the next day with police officials in which R. Thirunavukkarasu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order); A. Rengasamy, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Intelligence, and P. C. Thangaraj, Additional Superintendent of Police, participated.
The meeting discussed the security arrangements to be made at the Combined Court Buildings, District Court, T.N.P.I.D Act Cases Court and taluk courts at Tirumangalam, Melur, Usilampatti and Vadipatti.
It was decided that with effect from September 12, one Sub Inspector of Police and four armed constables would be posted at the main gate and one Sub Inspector and two armed constables in the western side gate, along with court staff, for identification of advocates, advocate clerks and court staff entering the premises, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
As part of a long-term measure, it had been decided to have separate parking for advocates and people attending the court.
It had been decided to have four metal detector gates in the four main entrances of the main building along with closed circuit television cameras temporarily, till the government provided permanent structures.
