In a joint action, the transport department officials and traffic police conducted checks on vehicles transporting school children and college students on Friday.

Following a directive from District Collector U. Sagayam, the officials have been conducting checks periodically at different locations in the city and peripheries for the last fortnight. “Instead of just imposing fines, the drivers, conductors and the educational institutions are told to rectify deficiencies, if any, found in the vehicles at the earliest,” the officials said.

Apart from ensuring that the drivers and conductors had their valid licences/badges, the officials also checked whether gadgets like fire extinguishers were in ready-to-use condition in the vehicles. Drivers who transported more number of children than the permissible limit were charged for overloading. Similarly, rash and negligent drivers were also warned for the first time. Any further complaints of overspeeding by the drivers would be viewed seriously and action would be taken as per the law.

The RTO (North), T. Ravichandran, and other officials conducted search at Narimedu, where as many as 20 vehicles were issued check memos. The violators remitted fines on the spot for over-loading.
