Four youngsters, including three graduates, were arrested by the Madurai City police on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in robbing a person on Sunday.

According to the police, S. Lakshmanan (48), a resident of Nagamalai Pudukottai, was robbed of his gold chain and ring near Sambattipuram junction on Bypass Road on Sunday night.

Police sources said that when a team, headed by S.S. Colony Inspector Arunachalam, was carrying out a routine vehicle check near Kalavasal junction on Bypass Road on Tuesday, they intercepted two youngsters, coming on a motorbike, on suspicion.

Later, based on information provided by the duo, identified as R. Arunpandian (27) from Meenakshipuram and R. Kumar (23) from Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, the police nabbed two more persons from Sellur — V. Karthik (25) and S. Anand (25).

The city police said that on interrogation the youngsters confessed to waylaying Mr. Lakshmanan and robbing the valuables from him. A statement issued by the police said that of the four arrested, Arunpandian had completed his masters in engineering while Anand was an MBA graduate.

Karthik had also completed bachelors in commerce, police said.

Police sources said that the stolen property and the motorbikes used for allegedly committing the crime were recovered from the youngsters. The four were later remanded in judicial custody after presenting them before a magistrate.
