The road that runs along the Walkers Park, a popular lung space on the banks of Vandiyur lake in K.K. Nagar, resembles a dumping ground.

Owing to lack of choice and convenience, the public and a few shop-owners dump waste opposite a private two-wheeler showroom on Lake View Road close to the East 4th Street in K. K. Nagar.

The unhygienic situation inconveniences commuters on the prime road, where multiple hospitals are located.

Further down the Lake View Road, traders have been dumping large quantities of rotten fruits on the roadside opposite to the Central Vegetable Market.

“The stench due to the excessive discarding of waste is unbearable as we pass the area. Commuters who wait at the traffic signal suffer due to this,” says a teacher residing in K. K. Nagar. The dump attracts stray cattle invariably.

Residents say it has been seven months since the two dumper bins that were placed in that area have been removed and cleaned.

Another resident said that as garbage was not collected at a fixed time every day, stray dogs rummage the the bins left outside homes thereby scattering waste all over the place.

When contacted, a zonal-level official of the Corporation said that they would look into the issue and take action soon.

To alert officials concerned on grievances, the public can contact the helpline number 842-842-5000 and even send pictures of the issue along with details of the street and ward.

After assuming office, the newly-elected Mayor V. Indrani had mentioned that removal of garbage would be one among the top priority.

Also last month, 342 compactor dumper bins were purchased by the Madurai Corporation to be installed in various locations across the city.
