Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged V.V. Rajan Chellapa, the newly-elected Mayor, to review property tax rates which were revised in 2008.
In a memorandum to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader, who will also be the first Mayor of an extended Madurai Corporation, chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu said that the property tax revision had severely impacted the public, trade and industry.
Following a G.O. dated November 12, 2007, and the subsequent clarifications issued by the State government on property tax revisions, the civic body reduced by half the classifications in the city and created four zones — A, B, C and D — in the order of taxation. However, he claimed, even areas having inadequate infrastructure were classified under ‘A' zone and taxed higher. Despite several requests, the Corporation refused to reduce the tax rates, the trade body said and urged Mr. Chellapa to revise the tax retrospectively from April 1, 2008, a press release said.
