The death and birth anniversaries of former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is observed by in ways that showcase his fondness for children and education. In one such initiative, a group of 10 share auto-rickshaw drivers in Madurai came together to give free rides to school children on the late leader’s death anniversary on Friday.
S. Karthik, one of the drivers, said they were inspired by the simplicity of the leader. “On his birth and death anniversaries, we go on routes that have more schools,” he said, adding that the group also distributes notebooks and pens to students.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who inaugurated the National Holistic Cardiology Conclave in Madurai on Saturday, stressed the need for using simple language while conveying message to the public. Launching an initiative to create awareness of the importance of immediate response to be given to persons suffering cardiac attack, the organisers of the conference explained the process to Ms. Sitharaman and made her try Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on a mannequin.
However, when the doctors used terms such as CPR and AED, which stands for Artificial External Defibrillator, she intervened the doctors on the stage to explain what these terms meant. “If you want to explain to people, you should avoid jargon and use simple language,” she said.
