Resource persons from Pay Agri, a private firm, conducted a demo for farmers here on Friday, explaining their new product, a repellent that apparently deters wild animals from entering farmlands. The product has been approved by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
The chemical combination is a liquid that’s priced at ₹80 plus GST, that is mixed with water in the proportion of one litre to five litres and when the solution is sprayed along the periphery of the farmland, wild animals, including wild boards, Indian Gaurs and wild elephants can be kept away from the farmland.
In a video footage they showed, even wild elephants were seen retreating from the farmland as the smell of the chemical acts as a repellent.
Farmers from Thevaram suggested that the repellent be tried at farmlands in the area where a lone elephant has been killing people. In the special grievance meeting held last week between farmers and the forest department, the product had been discussed and the forest department was open to the idea.
“Though it was mainly suggested for areas were crop damages by wild boar were reported, we can try it out in Thevaram also to check if it really acts as a repellent for wild elephants,” said Theni district forest officer Gauthaman.
