Divisional Railway Manager (Madurai division) Neenu Ittyerah has said repair works at the Scherzer’s span in the Pamban rail bridge have been completed and train services will be resumed after getting the certification from appropriate authority.

In a brief chat with reporters, Mr Ittyerah who visited Rameswaram railway station on Saturday for a routine inspection said the repair works had been completed and the Madurai division was awaiting the certification for resuming traffic on the bridge. “We will resume traffic soon after getting the certification,” she said.

Train traffic on the bridge, which connected the Rameswaram island with the mainland, remained suspended since December 4, 2018 after officials noticed cracks.

After the Madurai division completed the retrofit works, the Chennai-based Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), on being engaged by Southern Railway, had conducted stress-level tests and submitted its final report a few days ago.
