Waterbody not not getting water for several years: farmers

Seeking the removal of encroachments along the supply channel taking water to the Alanthaa Puthukulam near Kazhuneerkulam, a group of beneficiary farmers from three villages submitted a petition to Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish on Monday.

The weekly grievances redressal meet, which remained suspended for six weeks in the wake of Nanguneri by-poll model code of conduct, resumed on Monday to draw huge number of petitioners to the Collectorate.

A group of farmers from Kazhuneerkulam, Kallooththu and Muthukrishnaperi villages, who submitted petition to Ms. Shilpa, said the Aalanthaa Puthukkulam, which was nourishing 155 acres of cultivable lands in these three villages, was not getting water for the past several years as the supply channel had been encroached upon by a few persons with political and caste backing.

Though petitions to the revenue officials had been submitted on several occasions seeking the removal illegal structures along the channel hampering the free flow of water to the irrigation tank, no action had been taken in accordance with law.

“If the encroachments are removed on time, the waterbody will attain its maximum storage level during this monsoon to save the farmers having lands in these three villages. Hence, the Collector, who is extremely interested in desilting the irrigation tanks and has removed encroachments along Chittaar watercourse, should instruct the officials to remove the illegal structures killing the lives of over 50 farmers,” said farmer S. Ramesh of Kazhuneerkulam.

Crop insurance

Agriculturist Muthupandian of Maruthankinaru submitted a petition seeking the disbursal of insurance benefits for crop loss to the farmers who had paid their insurance premium through Mahendravadi Primary Agriculture Cooperative Bank.

“We’ve submitted petition to the Agriculture Department officials detailing the non-disbursal of insurance benefits though we have paid the insurance premium for the crop through the Mahendravadi PACB before the deadline. However, the insurance benefits for crop loss for the year 2016 – 2017 are yet to be disbursed to the farmers who had suffered crop loss,” Mr. Muthupandian said, warning that the affected farmers would lay siege to the Collectorate on November 11 if the compensation was not disbursed.

Better amenities

Tirunelveli district secretary of Social Democratic Party of India Burkit Alauddin submitted a petition seeking better amenities in the anganvadi in Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai. He said the children of this anganvadi were struggling a lot owing to absence of toilet and proper drinking water facilities. The children would suffer from baking heat during the summer as the anganvadi had been provided asbestos sheet roof.

Hence, the Collector should release sufficient funds for creating children-friendly environment in the anganvadi at Samathanapuram, Mr. Alauddin said.

Stir against decision

A group of Hindu Munnani cadre, after staging a demonstration in front of the Collectorate, later submitted a petition seeking withdrawal of the State Government’s decision of giving patta for those who had encroached upon the lands belonging to temples being administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment, including Sri Narumpoonatha Swami Temple at Pazhavoor.
